FLORIDA — A bicyclist was killed early Sunday morning after being struck by a vehicle on U.S. Highway 92 in Auburndale, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

The fatal crash occurred around 1:40 a.m. near the Polk Parkway interchange. Investigators said a 56-year-old Auburndale man was driving a 2007 Mercedes-Benz eastbound on US-92 while returning home from work when he struck a bicyclist from behind.

The bicyclist, described as a middle-aged man, died at the scene.

According to deputies, the bicycle was not equipped with lights or reflectors, and the rider was wearing dark clothing. Investigators also said the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet or reflective gear at the time of the crash.

Authorities are working to identify the victim and notify his next of kin.

The sheriff’s office said speed and impairment do not appear to be factors in the collision. No charges have been announced.

The crash remains under investigation. Additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information related to the incident to contact investigators.
