INDIANA — As Buc-ee’s continues expanding across the Midwest and eastern United States, Indiana remains one of the largest states without a location from the popular Texas-based travel center chain. While the company has not announced any Indiana stores, recent expansion activity and ongoing discussions surrounding potential development sites suggest the Hoosier State could eventually become home to its first Buc-ee’s.
The company has aggressively expanded beyond its Texas roots in recent years, opening locations in states including Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, South Carolina and Virginia while advancing new projects in North Carolina, Wisconsin, Louisiana, Kansas and other states. Buc-ee’s typically targets high-traffic interstate corridors, large development sites and rapidly growing regions that can support its massive travel centers.
Indiana possesses many of those characteristics.
Why Indiana Makes Sense
Indiana sits at the crossroads of several major interstate highways, including Interstate 65, Interstate 69, Interstate 70, Interstate 74, Interstate 80 and Interstate 90. The state serves as a major transportation hub for travelers moving between the Midwest, South and East Coast.
The combination of heavy freight traffic, growing suburban communities and available land near major interchanges makes Indiana a logical candidate for future Buc-ee’s expansion.
Most Likely Indiana Locations
Greenwood Area (Interstate 65)
The strongest candidate for Indiana’s first Buc-ee’s may be the Greenwood area south of Indianapolis.
The region has been the subject of public discussion regarding a potential Buc-ee’s development and offers direct access to Interstate 65, one of the busiest north-south routes in the Midwest. A location there would serve Indianapolis-area residents while also attracting travelers moving between Chicago, Indianapolis, Louisville and Nashville.
Whitestown and Boone County (Interstate 65)
Northwest of Indianapolis, the Whitestown and Boone County area has experienced significant commercial and residential growth.
Located along Interstate 65, the region has become one of Indiana’s fastest-growing development corridors and offers the large tracts of land Buc-ee’s typically requires.
Lafayette Area (Interstate 65)
Lafayette sits roughly midway between Indianapolis and Chicago and serves as a major regional center.
A Buc-ee’s near Lafayette would capture long-distance interstate traffic while also serving residents from surrounding communities. The area’s location along Interstate 65 makes it one of the most logical options in the state.
Northwest Indiana (Interstate 80/90)
Another possibility would be the Interstate 80 and Interstate 90 corridor near Merrillville, Portage or other communities east of Chicago.
The region experiences some of the highest traffic volumes in Indiana due to its proximity to Chicago and its position along one of the nation’s busiest east-west travel routes.
Evansville Area (Interstate 69)
Southwestern Indiana remains another potential market.
A Buc-ee’s near Evansville would serve travelers moving between Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee while expanding the company’s presence into a region that currently lacks a major travel center destination of that scale.
Less Likely but Possible
Fort Wayne and other communities along Interstate 69 could also attract interest due to their growing populations and strategic highway access. However, areas along Interstate 65 currently appear to align most closely with Buc-ee’s expansion strategy.
What Happens Next?
At present, Buc-ee’s has not officially announced plans to build in Indiana. The company remains focused on projects already underway across the country and on opening locations in several new markets.
However, Indiana’s extensive interstate network, central location and growing communities make it a state that fits many of the criteria Buc-ee’s has used when selecting new sites. If the company eventually enters Indiana, the Indianapolis area—particularly along the Interstate 65 corridor near Greenwood—appears to be the most logical starting point.
While any Indiana location remains speculative until formally announced, continued expansion across the Midwest suggests the Hoosier State could remain on Buc-ee’s radar as the company looks for future growth opportunities.
