The possibility of a Buc-ee’s opening in Illinois

0

ILLINOIS — As Buc-ee’s continues expanding across the Midwest and eastern United States, Illinois remains one of the largest states without a location from the popular Texas-based travel center chain. Although the company has not announced any Illinois projects, the state’s extensive interstate network and strategic location make it a logical candidate for future expansion.

In recent years, Buc-ee’s has moved well beyond its Texas roots, opening stores in states such as Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, Virginia and Ohio while pursuing new developments in North Carolina, Wisconsin, Louisiana, Kansas and other states. The company has consistently targeted high-traffic interstate corridors, rapidly growing regions and locations with enough land to accommodate its large-format travel centers.

Illinois offers all of those characteristics.

Why Illinois Makes Sense

Illinois sits at the center of several major transportation routes connecting the Midwest, South and East Coast. Interstate 55, Interstate 57, Interstate 70, Interstate 72, Interstate 74, Interstate 80, Interstate 88, Interstate 90 and Interstate 94 all cross the state.

The state also serves as a major freight and logistics hub, with millions of vehicles traveling through Illinois annually. While the Chicago metropolitan area presents development challenges due to land costs and density, many areas throughout the state fit Buc-ee’s preferred development model.

Most Likely Illinois Locations

Bloomington-Normal Area (Interstate 55 and Interstate 74)

The Bloomington-Normal region may be the strongest candidate for Illinois’ first Buc-ee’s.

Located at the intersection of Interstate 55 and Interstate 74, the area serves travelers moving between Chicago, St. Louis, Indianapolis and central Illinois. The region offers strong traffic counts, available development land and a central location within the state.

Springfield Area (Interstate 55 and Interstate 72)

Springfield is another logical possibility.

As Illinois’ capital city, Springfield attracts government, tourism and commercial traffic throughout the year. A Buc-ee’s near one of the major Interstate 55 interchanges could draw travelers moving between Chicago and St. Louis while also serving local residents.

Champaign-Urbana Area (Interstate 57 and Interstate 74)

The Champaign-Urbana region sits at the crossroads of two major interstate highways and serves as a major destination due to the presence of the University of Illinois.

A location near Interstate 57 and Interstate 74 would attract travelers moving between Chicago, Indianapolis, Memphis and St. Louis.

Metro East St. Louis Area (Interstate 55, Interstate 64 and Interstate 70)

The Illinois side of the St. Louis metropolitan area could also become attractive for Buc-ee’s.

Communities such as Troy, Edwardsville or other areas near major interstate interchanges would provide access to both regional traffic and long-distance travelers moving across the Midwest.

Effingham Area (Interstate 57 and Interstate 70)

Effingham may be one of the state’s most overlooked but strongest possibilities.

Known as one of Illinois’ premier highway crossroads, Effingham sits at the junction of Interstate 57 and Interstate 70. The area already serves as a major stop for travelers moving between Chicago, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Nashville and Memphis.

Its location closely resembles other interstate-focused markets where Buc-ee’s has successfully expanded.

Less Likely but Possible

The Chicago metropolitan area has tremendous traffic volumes but may be less attractive due to high land costs, development constraints and limited availability of large parcels needed for a Buc-ee’s travel center.

Southern Illinois communities along Interstate 24 could also be considered, though traffic volumes generally do not match those found at the state’s larger interstate intersections.

What Happens Next?

Buc-ee’s has not announced plans for an Illinois location, and there is currently no publicly known project in the state.

However, Illinois possesses many of the characteristics the company seeks when entering new markets. Major interstate corridors, strong commercial traffic, available development sites and a central Midwestern location all work in the state’s favor.

If Buc-ee’s eventually decides to enter Illinois, the Bloomington-Normal area, Springfield, Champaign-Urbana or Effingham appear to be among the most logical candidates. Of those, Effingham and Bloomington-Normal may offer the strongest combination of interstate access, travel volume and available land.

While no Illinois Buc-ee’s has been announced, the state’s transportation advantages make it a plausible target for future expansion as the company continues its growth across the Midwest and beyond.
