VIRGINIA — Five people were killed and 34 others were taken to hospitals after a bus crashed into multiple vehicles on Interstate 95 in Stafford County early Friday morning, according to Virginia State Police.
The crash happened around 2:35 a.m. on southbound I-95 near the 146-mile marker, close to the Garrisonville exit.
State police said traffic was slowing because of an upcoming work zone when a bus failed to slow down and struck six vehicles.
Authorities said the five fatalities were occupants of vehicles hit by the bus. Of the 34 people transported to hospitals, three suffered critical injuries.
The crash prompted major traffic disruptions along the interstate. The Virginia Department of Transportation said all southbound traffic was being diverted at Exit 148 in Quantico to U.S. Route 1 south. Motorists could re-enter I-95 south at Exit 143 near Aquia and Garrisonville.
Traffic delays extended into Prince William County, with backups reported beginning near the 154-mile marker before the Dumfries exit.
Virginia State Police said the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
