SOUTH CAROLINA — A 16-year-old Spartanburg teen has been arrested after police say he assaulted an employee at a phone repair store and stole money from a tip jar.

According to an incident report from the Spartanburg Police Department, officers were called around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday to the iFix Phone Repair store on Dorman Centre Drive after a reported disturbance.

Police said an employee reported that a customer became upset because a phone could not be repaired to his satisfaction. The customer allegedly slapped the employee in the face twice before taking money from the store’s tip jar and leaving the scene.

Investigators said the assault was captured on surveillance video.

A witness reportedly provided dispatchers with the license plate number of a gold Toyota Avalon that the suspect used to leave the area. Officers later determined the vehicle belonged to the mother of a 16-year-old boy.

Later that day, officers responded to the 100 block of Oakview Drive for reports of a suspicious person with a weapon. Police said the teen attempted to run when officers arrived but was quickly detained.

The teen was charged with strong-arm robbery and taken to the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice, according to the report.
