
GEORGIA — Chatham County police are investigating after a body was found floating in the Savannah River Monday afternoon, according to authorities.
The Chatham County Police Department said the incident was reported around 12:57 p.m. near Foundation Drive in Garden City.
According to police reports, multiple officers responded to the scene after a witness spotted a body floating in the water beneath a dock and contacted authorities.
Investigators said Savannah Fire personnel and dock workers recovered the body from the river. Officers identified the deceased only as an unidentified Black male.
Police said officers searched the body but were unable to locate any form of identification.
A representative from Colonial Group, Inc. told investigators he recognized the man from seeing him on the property on May 16 but did not know his identity, according to the report.
Authorities said next of kin had not been notified as of the latest update. The Chatham County Coroner’s Office took custody of the body.
The Chatham County Police Department said the investigation remains ongoing.
