GEORGIA — A man was shot and killed by an officer with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department early Tuesday morning after police say he fired a gun during an encounter with officers.
According to the department, officers were called to the 1000 block of Hull Road around 12:40 a.m. after receiving reports of a man shooting a firearm.
When officers arrived, they encountered an armed man who allegedly fired at least one round, police said.
At least one officer then fired their weapon, striking the suspect. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been asked to investigate the shooting, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. The police department’s Office of Professional Standards will also conduct an internal administrative investigation.
The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigations.
Authorities have not yet released the names of the suspect or the officer involved.
