KENTUCKY — A Dayton, Ohio man was arrested in Laurel County after deputies allegedly found more than two pounds of methamphetamine during a traffic safety checkpoint early Friday morning.

According to Laurel County Sheriff John Root, deputies arrested 48-year-old Robert Taylor around 3:43 a.m. at a checkpoint near Parker Road and Water Works Road west of London.

Authorities said deputies deployed K-9 “Ash” to conduct a free-air sniff around Taylor’s gray Kia Forte. The dog alerted to the presence of narcotics, leading deputies to conduct a probable-cause search of the vehicle.

Investigators said the search uncovered approximately two pounds of suspected methamphetamine.

Taylor was charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance involving more than two grams of methamphetamine. He was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.

The sheriff’s office said the arrest followed more than a month-long investigation involving the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, Kentucky State Police, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Investigators believe the drugs were intended for distribution in Laurel County. The investigation into possible additional out-of-state sources remains ongoing.
