Five tornados touch down in Mississippi, National Weather Service confirms

MISSISSIPPI — Five tornadoes were confirmed after severe storms moved through Mississippi on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Preliminary reports show the storms produced more than 70 miles of tornado paths and caused 472 individual damage points across the state.

One tornado that began in east Franklin County remained on the ground for nearly 59 minutes and traveled more than 35 miles. The tornado reached peak winds of 137 mph and was rated an EF3. Officials said 12 people were injured during the storm.

The National Weather Service also confirmed the Garden City tornado reached peak winds of 136 mph and received an EF3 rating. That tornado traveled just over 30 miles.

State officials reported a total of 17 injuries connected to the severe weather outbreak.

The National Weather Service said damage assessments remain preliminary and could change as surveys continue. Officials encouraged residents to stay weather aware as additional storms remain possible across parts of Mississippi.
