Multiple tornados possible in Mississippi

MISSISSIPPI — Mississippi faces a heightened threat of tornadoes Wednesday as a powerful storm system moves across the region, according to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center.

Forecasters have placed much of central Mississippi under an enhanced risk for severe thunderstorms, indicating a greater likelihood of dangerous weather, including tornadoes. The outlook highlights central parts of the state as a primary area of concern, where atmospheric conditions are expected to be most favorable for rotating storms.

SPC Day 1 Tornado Outlook

The Storm Prediction Center said supercells capable of producing all types of severe weather — including tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds — are expected to develop Wednesday afternoon and evening.

The tornado threat is expected to increase later in the day as wind patterns in the lower atmosphere strengthen, creating conditions supportive of stronger and potentially longer-lived tornadoes.

Meteorologists noted that warm, moist air moving into Mississippi, combined with strong winds higher in the atmosphere, will create an environment conducive to severe storm development. Some storms may remain isolated long enough to produce tornadoes before transitioning into clusters capable of widespread wind damage.

The greatest concern for tornado development is expected from late afternoon into the evening hours, particularly across central Mississippi. Forecasters also warn that at least one strong tornado cannot be ruled out if storms are able to fully develop.

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware throughout the day, have multiple ways to receive warnings, and be prepared to take shelter quickly if a tornado warning is issued.
