Three tornadoes touch down in Mississippi, National Weather Service confirms

MISSISSIPPI — The National Weather Service has confirmed that three tornadoes touched down in Gulfport early Saturday morning as a line of severe storms moved through South Mississippi.

According to officials, the storms brought strong winds and multiple tornadoes to the area on April 25. A thunderstorm wind gust of 68 mph was recorded at Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport.

The first tornado touched down around 6:26 a.m. near Ohio Avenue and Polk Street. The EF1 tornado produced winds of about 90 mph, snapping a tree on Indiana Avenue and causing minor damage along Ohio Avenue.

A second tornado touched down at approximately 6:28 a.m. near 34th Street and Highway 49. This EF1 tornado had winds estimated at 95 mph and caused more significant damage. Trees were uprooted or snapped from 34th Street to Highway 90, particularly near and south of Pass Road. Officials also reported that two metal garage doors were blown out and some homes lost roof shingles.

The third tornado touched down around 6:29 a.m. near Pass Road and 28th Street. This EF1 tornado also had estimated winds of 95 mph and caused sporadic tree damage extending toward Centennial Plaza.

No injuries or fatalities were reported in connection with the tornadoes. Cleanup efforts and damage assessments are ongoing.
