NORTH CAROLINA — A man died late Friday night after a single-vehicle crash in Caldwell County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers said they responded just before midnight to a crash on Connelly Springs Road near Baton Church Road. Authorities reported that a 2013 Ford Taurus was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed when it crossed the center line, left the roadway on the left side, and struck a tree.
The driver, identified as 39-year-old Roy James Byrd, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said both speed and impairment were contributing factors in the crash.
Connelly Springs Road was closed for approximately one hour while troopers conducted their on-scene investigation.
