ILLINOIS — A police standoff in Jacksonville, Illinois led to the closure of a nearby middle school Friday morning, according to authorities.

Officials said the situation began as a barricade incident near Park and Smithland streets and has been ongoing since at least 6:41 a.m. The Jacksonville Police Department said the incident is considered isolated and asked the public to avoid the area.

The Illinois State Police is also assisting. Authorities said the suspect is believed to be armed but alone, and the situation is not considered a hostage incident.

As a precaution, Jacksonville Middle School was closed for the day. School officials said police advised staff not to begin instruction due to safety concerns.

Superintendent Steve Ptacek said the closure applies only to the middle school. Other nearby schools, including Washington Elementary School, remained open, though transportation routes were adjusted.

Authorities said the public is not believed to be at risk at this time.

The situation remains ongoing.
