SOUTH CAROLINA — Human remains found in a trash can in a neighboring county may belong to a woman who went missing two years ago in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, according to authorities.
The Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office said the missing woman’s last name is Spurlock, though her first name has not been released.
Officials said investigators had followed leads in the case over the past two years but had not been able to locate her.
The remains were discovered in a trash can in a nearby county and have been turned over to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) for DNA testing. Authorities said it could take several weeks to confirm whether the remains are those of the missing woman.
It is not yet clear where exactly the remains were found or how the person died.
The woman’s family has been notified of the discovery, officials said.
The investigation remains ongoing.
