ALABAMA — A suspect who was injured and arrested following a law enforcement chase in Madison County on Tuesday morning has escaped from Huntsville Hospital, according to authorities.
A spokesperson with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said 42-year-old Jacob Bastiaans was taken into custody after a pursuit with deputies on Shields Road. During the chase, Bastiaans complained of pain and was transported to Huntsville Hospital by deputies for treatment.
Authorities said Bastiaans escaped from the hospital around 2 p.m. As of a media briefing held at approximately 3:10 p.m., law enforcement officers were actively searching for him. The Huntsville Police Department is assisting in the search.
Bastiaans is described as a white male, standing 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing approximately 180 pounds. He has blonde hair, which he wears in a ponytail, and was still handcuffed at the time of his escape. Officials said he was not armed.
The suspect is facing several drug-related charges, including possession of contraband, possession of drug paraphernalia and attempting to elude law enforcement.
As a precaution, Huntsville Junior High School and Blossomwood Elementary School were placed under a secure perimeter following the escape. School officials said bus and carline dismissal procedures would continue, but students who walk home must be picked up by a parent or guardian.
Authorities continue to search for Bastiaans and are asking the public to report any information that could assist in locating him.
