PENNSYLVANIA — Pennsylvania State Police and animal welfare officials have rescued dozens of animals from a Fayette County home as part of an ongoing animal welfare investigation.
According to state police, 62 dogs and two cats were recently removed from a residence in the 500 block of Main Street in Belle Vernon. The investigation began after an owner voluntarily surrendered 39 dogs, including multiple puppies, to a local animal rescue in April 2026.
During intake, many of the dogs tested positive for parasites, prompting concerns about conditions at the property. The rescue organization subsequently filed a complaint with Pennsylvania State Police.
Troopers said their investigation uncovered evidence suggesting the property may have been operating as an unlicensed kennel. Authorities reported that more than 26 dogs had been housed at the property within a year.
The animals were removed from the home and placed with rescue groups and animal welfare organizations for evaluation and veterinary treatment.
Police said no charges have been filed at this time. Anyone with information related to the investigation is encouraged to contact Pennsylvania State Police.
Photos released by investigators appear to show severe and unsanitary conditions inside the home.
Erie-based ANNA Shelter said in a social media post that it assisted state police with removing the animals. The shelter said the animals are now receiving treatment and recovering.
According to the shelter, some of the animals were “actively dying” when they were removed from the property.
ANNA Shelter is seeking donations of pet food, contractor bags and gift cards as it works to care for the animals and prepare them for adoption.
