37 dogs rescued from backyard breeder in Kentucky

KENTUCKY — Dozens of dogs are getting a second chance after being rescued from what officials describe as inhumane conditions at a suspected backyard breeding operation.

According to the Hart County Animal Shelter, 37 dogs were removed from a property where they were allegedly being kept in poor living conditions. Shelter Director Anthony Roberts said the animals were found confined in overcrowded spaces, with some chained to trees and others kept in pens contaminated with feces.

Roberts said many of the dogs had limited access to clean water, with some containers filled with dirt, leaves and mud.

A backyard breeder is typically defined as someone who breeds animals for profit without maintaining proper living conditions or care standards.

Despite the large number of animals, Roberts said the shelter was able to take in all 37 dogs without assistance from neighboring counties, noting that the facility had available space at the time.

He credited the community for its ongoing support of the shelter, saying residents often step up to provide needed resources.

Roberts also encouraged potential pet owners to thoroughly research breeders before purchasing animals, advising them to visit breeding locations and observe how the animals are cared for.

Some of the rescued dogs are now available for adoption through the Hart County Animal Shelter.
