OHIO — Two people were seriously injured Thursday evening after a single-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 33 in Logan County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The crash happened at approximately 7:20 p.m. in the westbound lanes south of Zanesfield in Jefferson Township.
Troopers said Zoila Lupera, 55, of Elida, was driving a 2012 Ford Explorer westbound when the SUV crossed the right edge line. Investigators said Lupera overcorrected, causing the vehicle to travel across both westbound lanes before leaving the left side of the roadway and striking a concrete barrier multiple times.
The SUV then crossed back over both westbound lanes, hit the opposite concrete barrier, and came to a stop.
Lupera was flown by MedFlight to Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, where she was listed in serious but stable condition.
Her passenger, Jorge Lupera-Centeno, 84, of Ecuador, was initially taken by ground ambulance to Mary Rutan Hospital in Bellefontaine before being airlifted to Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. He was listed in critical condition.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said both occupants were wearing seat belts, and impairment is not believed to have been a factor in the crash.
The westbound lanes of U.S. 33 were closed for about two hours while crews responded to the scene and investigated the crash.
Bellefontaine Fire and EMS, Tri-Valley EMS, MedFlight, and Schaffer’s Towing assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
