FLORIDA — Two people were killed in a fiery head-on crash early Wednesday morning in Marion County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash occurred just before 2 a.m. on State Road 40, east of State Road 326 in the Silver Springs area.

Investigators said a sedan traveling westbound on SR-40 failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the centerline and entered the eastbound lane. The sedan then collided head-on with an SUV traveling eastbound.

Following the impact, the sedan caught fire, authorities said.

The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV, identified as a 43-year-old woman, was transported to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Officials said the identity of the sedan driver has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. Notifications for both victims had not been completed as of Wednesday morning.

The crash shut down State Road 40 for several hours as troopers investigated and crews worked to clear the scene. The roadway reopened around 6:15 a.m.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
