GEORGIA — Two Georgia women are facing multiple charges after deputies said they attempted to smuggle drugs, phones and other contraband into a state prison using a drone.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded May 3 to a report of a suspicious vehicle near Washington State Prison in Washington County, Georgia.

During the investigation, deputies located contraband hidden in a nearby field. Authorities said the items included nearly three pounds of marijuana, tobacco products, cell phones, chargers, clothing items and saw blades.

Investigators believe the women were planning to use a drone to deliver the items into the prison.

Evidence found at the scene also linked the suspects’ vehicle to the contraband, deputies said.

Authorities arrested Mariana Torres, 17, and Anyela Contreras Torres, 19, both of Duluth. Their vehicle was impounded as part of the investigation.

The two women are charged with unmanned aircraft to accomplish violations, possession of a drone during the commission of a crime, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of prohibited items by inmates, trading with inmates involving phones, drugs and tobacco, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime and possession of tools during the commission of a crime.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing.
