Tornados possible in part of Georgia Saturday

GEORGIA — Forecasters are warning of a potential round of severe weather across southern Georgia on Saturday, with the possibility of tornadoes alongside damaging winds and hail.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, a slight risk of severe thunderstorms has been issued for much of southern Georgia, where conditions are expected to become favorable for strong to severe storms from Saturday morning through the early evening hours.

SPC Day 2 Tornado Outlook

The system is being driven by an upper-level disturbance moving east out of the Mississippi Valley, pushing a cold front toward the Southeast. Ahead of this front, warm and humid air will help fuel thunderstorm development across the region.

Meteorologists say the environment will support organized thunderstorms, including clusters or possibly a line of storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts, which appear to be the primary hazard.

However, the setup also includes a low-end tornado threat. Forecast data indicates that wind shear in the atmosphere could allow some storms to rotate, particularly early in the day. That said, forecasters note the tornado risk remains uncertain, as factors such as weakening low-level winds and storm structure may limit the overall threat.

If storms can develop in a more isolated manner instead of forming a solid line, the chance for isolated tornadoes could increase.

In addition to wind and tornado concerns, isolated hail may occur in stronger storms.

Residents across southern Georgia are urged to stay weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings as conditions evolve throughout the day.
