Tornado watch issued for parts of Michigan

MICHIGAN — A tornado watch has been issued for portions of southwest Michigan as severe weather moves through the region Thursday evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Tornado Watch 90 remains in effect until 11 p.m. EDT and includes several counties in southwest Michigan. Counties under the watch are Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Calhoun, Cass, Eaton, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph and Van Buren.

Cities and communities impacted include Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Benton Harbor, St. Joseph, Hastings, Charlotte and surrounding areas.

A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. Residents in the affected counties are urged to stay alert, monitor weather updates and be prepared to take shelter if warnings are issued.

The watch is part of a broader severe weather system affecting parts of the Great Lakes region Thursday evening.

Officials recommend having multiple ways to receive weather alerts and identifying a safe place in advance in case conditions worsen.

The situation remains active and will continue to be monitored throughout the evening.
