VIRGINIA — Although May typically brings mild to warm spring weather, historical records show that measurable snowfall in Virginia, while extremely rare, has occurred.
According to data from the National Weather Service and regional climate archives, Virginia has recorded both trace and measurable snowfall late in the spring season. These events are highly unusual due to warming temperatures, but they remain possible under specific atmospheric conditions.
Late-season snowfall requires a combination of unseasonably cold air and sufficient moisture.
This setup can develop when a strong cold front pushes southward, allowing cold air from Canada to move into the region while a low-pressure system provides precipitation. If temperatures throughout the atmosphere are low enough, precipitation can fall as snow instead of rain.
