OKLAHOMA — As Buc-ee’s continues expanding across the Midwest, South and East Coast, Oklahoma remains one of the largest states without a location from the Texas-based travel center chain. Despite bordering Texas, where Buc-ee’s was founded and operates dozens of stores, Oklahoma has yet to receive a location of its own.
While the company has not announced any Oklahoma projects, the state possesses many of the characteristics Buc-ee’s typically looks for when entering new markets. With major interstate corridors, strong regional traffic and available development land, Oklahoma could become a logical target for future expansion.
Why Oklahoma Makes Sense
Oklahoma sits at the center of several important transportation routes connecting Texas, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Colorado and New Mexico.
Major highways crossing the state include Interstate 35, Interstate 40, Interstate 44 and Interstate 235. These corridors carry millions of travelers annually and serve as vital freight routes linking the South, Midwest and Southwest.
The state’s central location and lower development costs compared to many coastal states could make it attractive for a large-scale Buc-ee’s project.
Most Likely Oklahoma Locations
Oklahoma City Area (Interstate 35 and Interstate 40)
The Oklahoma City region may be the strongest candidate for Oklahoma’s first Buc-ee’s.
Located at the intersection of Interstate 35 and Interstate 40, Oklahoma City sits at one of the busiest highway crossroads in the central United States. The area attracts significant commercial, commuter and long-distance travel traffic.
A location on the outskirts of the metropolitan area would provide access to travelers moving between Texas, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and New Mexico while serving one of Oklahoma’s largest population centers.
Norman Area (Interstate 35)
Just south of Oklahoma City, Norman presents another strong possibility.
The city sits directly along Interstate 35 and serves as a major gateway into the Oklahoma City metropolitan area from Texas. Its growing population and available land near interstate exits align with Buc-ee’s typical development model.
Tulsa Area (Interstate 44 and U.S. 75)
Tulsa represents another logical candidate.
As Oklahoma’s second-largest metropolitan area, Tulsa serves as a major economic and transportation hub. A Buc-ee’s near Interstate 44 could attract travelers moving between Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas while drawing local customers from northeastern Oklahoma.
Shawnee Area (Interstate 40)
Shawnee sits east of Oklahoma City along Interstate 40 and experiences substantial interstate traffic.
A location there would provide convenient access for travelers heading between Oklahoma City, Arkansas and eastern destinations while avoiding some of the development challenges associated with larger metropolitan areas.
Lawton Area (Interstate 44 Corridor)
Southwestern Oklahoma remains another possibility.
Lawton serves as a regional center and sits near a major corridor connecting Oklahoma and Texas. While traffic volumes are lower than those near Oklahoma City or Tulsa, the area’s strategic location could make it a long-term candidate.
Less Likely but Possible
The state’s panhandle and far northwestern regions generally do not experience the traffic volumes Buc-ee’s typically targets.
Similarly, more rural portions of eastern Oklahoma may lack the year-round interstate traffic necessary to support one of the company’s large-format travel centers.
What Happens Next?
At present, Buc-ee’s has not announced any plans to enter Oklahoma. The company remains focused on projects already underway across the country, including developments in neighboring Kansas and other states throughout the Midwest and South.
However, Oklahoma’s transportation network, growing metropolitan areas and proximity to Texas make it a state that appears well-positioned for future consideration.
If Buc-ee’s eventually decides to enter Oklahoma, the Interstate 35 corridor near Oklahoma City or Norman appears to offer the strongest combination of traffic, visibility and available land. Tulsa and Shawnee also remain realistic possibilities based on the company’s established site-selection strategy.
While no Oklahoma Buc-ee’s has been announced, the state’s location at the crossroads of several major interstate highways makes it a plausible candidate for future expansion as the company continues its nationwide growth.
