Strong to severe storms expected across parts of Kentucky Monday

KENTUCKY — Eastern Kentucky is at risk for severe thunderstorms Monday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed portions of eastern Kentucky under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather as storms are expected to develop across the southern Appalachian region.

SPC Day 2 Outlook

Forecasters say scattered thunderstorms are expected to increase in coverage and intensity Monday afternoon and continue into the evening. The primary threat is expected to be damaging straight-line winds capable of downing trees and power lines.

An isolated tornado also cannot be ruled out, especially across areas near the Appalachian foothills, where atmospheric conditions may become favorable for a few rotating storms embedded within a line of thunderstorms.

The severe weather threat is expected to develop as an approaching cold front interacts with warm, humid air across the region. Strengthening winds aloft are expected to help organize thunderstorms as they move across eastern Kentucky during the afternoon and evening.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware Monday and have multiple ways to receive watches and warnings as conditions can change quickly.
