Strong to severe storms could bring damaging winds to parts of Indiana Friday

0

INDIANA — Parts of southern Indiana are under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center.

Forecasters say scattered severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across portions of the Ozark Plateau into the lower Ohio Valley, with southern Indiana included in the area of greatest concern.

SPC Day 1 Outlook

The primary threats include damaging wind gusts, although a few tornadoes are also possible, especially in areas near the Ohio River. The Storm Prediction Center said warm, humid air and favorable wind shear could allow some storms to become supercells capable of producing tornadoes.

Several clusters of thunderstorms are expected to develop during the afternoon and continue into the evening. Some of those storms could organize into lines capable of producing corridors of strong to severe winds.

The forecast also notes that a weather disturbance moving into the lower Ohio Valley could enhance storm development as it tracks east, increasing the potential for severe weather across southern Indiana.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts throughout the day and be prepared to take action if severe thunderstorm or tornado warnings are issued.
