MARYLAND — Parts of western Maryland are under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms Friday, according to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center.
Forecasters say scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop during the afternoon and evening as weather disturbances track east across the Ohio Valley and central Appalachians. Although the highest severe weather threat is expected farther west, a few storms could remain strong as they move into western Maryland.

The primary hazard will be damaging wind gusts, though isolated hail is also possible with the strongest storms. Thunderstorms are expected to become more numerous during the afternoon before gradually weakening later Friday night.
Warm, humid air combined with daytime heating will provide enough instability for some storms to briefly become severe before moving east across the region.
Residents are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts and have a way to receive weather warnings should severe thunderstorms develop.
