
NORTH CAROLINA — An investigation is underway after skeletal remains were discovered Wednesday afternoon in Washington.
According to the Washington Police Department, officers were called around 2 p.m. to the 900 block of Carolina Avenue following a report of possible human remains.
When officers arrived, they found skeletal remains in a stormwater drainage area near the roadway.
Police said the remains appear to have been at the location for an extended period of time based on their condition.
The investigation is being conducted by the Washington Police Department with assistance from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, North Carolina Office of Chief Medical Examiner and East Carolina University.
Authorities said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
The identity of the remains and the circumstances surrounding the death have not yet been determined.
