Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued for parts of Pennsylvania

PENNSYLVANIA — Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across portions of northern Pennsylvania Saturday afternoon and evening as a cold front moves through the region, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Binghamton said severe thunderstorms are possible through the evening hours, with conditions favorable for damaging wind gusts, large hail, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall.

The greatest threat is expected across northern and northeastern Pennsylvania, including areas near Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Towanda, Tunkhannock, Montrose, Wellsboro and surrounding communities.

Storms developing during the afternoon and evening could become severe, with the potential for isolated damaging winds capable of downing trees and power lines. Heavy downpours may also lead to localized flooding in areas that receive repeated rounds of rain.

The National Weather Service is urging residents to remain weather aware, monitor forecasts and have multiple ways to receive warnings as storms move through the region.

Additional watches, warnings or advisories may be issued as conditions evolve Saturday evening.
