MICHIGAN — A 46-year-old man was seriously injured after a semi truck struck a tractor that was mowing near Interstate 69 in Branch County on Thursday, according to Michigan State Police.

The crash happened around 12:30 p.m. on southbound I-69 near the Newton Road Bridge in Clinton Township. Investigators said a tractor operating near the highway was hit by a semi truck.

The tractor’s driver suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital for treatment.

Michigan State Police reminded motorists to remain alert when approaching maintenance crews and equipment working along highways.

“Motorists are reminded to stay alert for mowing crews and equipment working in medians, shoulders, and ditch areas,” MSP said in a statement posted on social media. “If you see maintenance crews or mowing equipment ahead, move over one lane when it is safe to do so. If you cannot move over, slow down and proceed with caution.”

The crash led to the closure of southbound I-69 for more than eight hours before the roadway reopened around 9 p.m.

Investigators said drug use could be a factor in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
