WISCONSIN — A wrong-way driver was killed in a head-on crash with a semi tractor-trailer early Tuesday in Waupaca County, according to authorities.
The Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to the eastbound lanes of U.S. Highway 10 near Old Highway 29 at approximately 1:36 a.m.
Investigators said the driver was traveling the wrong way when the vehicle collided head-on with a semi. The wrong-way driver died at the scene before they could be transported to a hospital. Authorities believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
The driver of the semi was not injured and is cooperating with investigators.
While deputies were working at the crash scene, officials said a third vehicle drove through traffic control measures and barricades onto the closed portion of the highway. Deputies stopped that driver, who was later arrested on multiple charges, including driving with a revoked license and reckless endangerment.
Authorities have not released the names of those involved.
Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including local police and fire departments, emergency medical services, and the Waupaca County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The crash remains under investigation.
