NORTH CAROLINA — At least one person was killed in a fiery two-vehicle crash early Monday on a ramp connecting Interstate 85 to Interstate 885, according to Durham police.
The crash occurred shortly after 3 a.m. and shut down the southbound ramp from I-85 to I-885 for several hours as emergency crews responded and investigated the scene.
Authorities said both vehicles involved were heavily damaged. One vehicle was found tangled in trees and on fire when officers arrived, while the other came to rest in a ditch.
Emergency responders blocked the ramp during the investigation, causing significant traffic delays into the morning commute. As of around 7:30 a.m., delays were still being reported, and drivers heading north on I-85 were advised to use N.C. 55 as an alternate route.
Officials have not released the identity of the person killed or what led up to the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing.
