GEORGIA — A passenger was killed and a driver remains in critical condition after a crash involving suspected car break-in suspects early Friday morning in Atlanta, according to authorities.

Investigators said the crash happened around 2:50 a.m. at the intersection of Boulevard SE and Mead Street in the Grant Park neighborhood.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, an Atlanta Police Department officer attempted to pull over a white Infiniti Q50 believed to be connected to car break-ins. The driver allegedly sped away from the traffic stop.

Authorities said the vehicle struck a pedestrian, then the driver lost control and crashed into a power pole. The impact ejected the driver from the car.

Officers were able to pull the passenger from the vehicle before it caught fire. The passenger later died at a hospital, while the driver was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators said evidence collected at the scene included a gun and cash found near the vehicle.

The crash also caused a power outage affecting about 1,200 Georgia Power customers. Power was restored later in the morning.

The road remained closed for several hours as crews investigated the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
