GEORGIA — A passenger was killed and a driver was injured after a pickup truck overturned Friday afternoon in Crawford County, according to authorities.

Deputies responded to the crash at the intersection of Highway 80 West and Hopewell Road West around 3:21 p.m., Sheriff Lewis Walker said in a release.

When first responders arrived, they found a male passenger dead at the scene. The driver was transported to a hospital in Macon for treatment.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the crash involved a black 1984 Chevrolet S-10. Investigators said the driver was attempting to navigate a curve when the vehicle crossed the centerline and traveled off the roadway while trying to avoid another vehicle.

The pickup then struck a mailbox, rotated across the roadway, hit a culvert and overturned onto its top. Authorities said the passenger became pinned underneath the truck and died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The identity of the victim has not been released pending notification of family members.

The Georgia State Patrol and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office are continuing to investigate the crash.
