ALABAMA — One person was killed and at least one other person was injured in a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon on Birmingham’s east side, according to police.
The crash happened around 3 p.m. in the 6300 block of First Avenue North.
Birmingham police, Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service and Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene.
Police Officer De’Rell Freeman said a man in one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman who was traveling in the same vehicle had already exited the vehicle when first responders arrived and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Authorities said at least one occupant of the second vehicle may have been trapped inside following the crash, though that information had not been officially confirmed.
Freeman said the crash was not connected to and did not result from a police pursuit.
A Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy suffered a hand injury while assisting those involved in the wreck.
The identities of those involved have not been released. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
