SOUTH CAROLINA — One person was killed and another was injured Thursday night in a single-vehicle crash after the driver attempted to avoid a deer in the roadway, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Master Trooper Hannah Davidson said the crash happened around 9:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 176 near Old State Road and Coach Road near Holly Hill.
Investigators said a 2007 Honda Accord was traveling east when the occupants spotted a deer in the roadway. In an attempt to avoid hitting the animal, the vehicle ran off the right side of the road, overturned and struck a tree.
The driver died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash, Davidson said.
A front-seat passenger was transported to a hospital. Authorities did not immediately release information about the passenger’s condition.
The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not yet identified the victim.
The crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
