
NORTH CAROLINA — One person was killed after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 52 in Winston-Salem early Wednesday morning, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department.
The crash occurred shortly after midnight in the northbound lanes of Highway 52 beneath the Liberty Street Bridge.
Police said a driver traveling northbound collided with a pedestrian who was in the roadway. The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing at the time of the crash, and investigators are still trying to determine why the individual was on the highway. The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation, police said.
As a result of the crash, both northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 52 between Liberty Street and Akron Drive were temporarily closed. All lanes have since reopened.
The investigation remains ongoing.
