NORTH CAROLINA — A pedestrian was killed in an early morning crash Monday on a busy Raleigh overpass, prompting significant road closures during the morning commute, police said.

Officers with the Raleigh Police Department responded around 3:40 a.m. to a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian near the 2900 block of South Saunders Street, along the U.S. 401 overpass near South Wilmington Street.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash led to major traffic disruptions, with portions of the roadway closed during rush hour. South Saunders Street has since reopened, but South Wilmington Street remained closed through the morning, according to officials. The North Carolina Department of Transportation said the road was expected to reopen by around 11 a.m.

No additional details about the victim or the circumstances leading up to the crash have been released. The investigation is ongoing.
