TENNESSEE — A Memphis man is facing multiple charges after Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers said he drove more than 120 mph the wrong way on the interstate while fleeing from police.
According to authorities, the incident happened around 10:30 p.m. May 20 when a THP trooper exiting Interstate 240 East onto South Perkins Road saw a maroon Nissan Maxima run a red light.
Police said the driver, identified as Dedrick Taylor, stopped in the middle of the intersection after noticing the trooper’s vehicle. When the trooper activated emergency lights and sirens to initiate a traffic stop, Taylor allegedly drove the wrong way onto I-240 East.
Authorities said the trooper pursued the vehicle as Taylor reached speeds exceeding 120 mph. During the chase, investigators said Taylor cut off multiple vehicles, nearly causing several crashes, and drove on the shoulder while traveling on State Route 385 East.
According to a police affidavit, Taylor’s actions placed other motorists at risk of serious injury or death.
Troopers said Taylor later exited at Ridgeway Road, turned off his headlights and taillights, and reentered State Route 385 before eventually exiting at Kirby Parkway. Authorities said he failed to make a right turn, struck a concrete median and disabled the vehicle.
Taylor was taken into custody without incident.
During a search of the vehicle, troopers reported finding several bags containing a substance that tested positive for THC, a digital scale and about $300 in cash.
Taylor has been charged with possession of marijuana with intent to manufacture, sell or distribute, evading arrest, felony reckless endangerment, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving and several traffic-related violations.
He is being held on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court May 28.
