OHIO — A man is in custody after police say he attacked a woman in Mariemont and then jumped into the Ohio River from the Purple People Bridge during Friday morning’s rush hour.

According to court records, 39-year-old Victor Nicolas “knowingly attempted to cause serious physical harm to the victim by attempting to stab her with a knife and cutting her right arm” at a residence on Homewood Road.

Police said Nicolas fled the scene before officers arrived. Newport police later spotted him about 11 miles away, but he reportedly leaped into the river when they approached.

Cincinnati fire crews responded to rescue the man from the water, Assistant Fire Chief Matt Flagler said. Nicolas was pulled from the river and transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

After being released from the hospital Monday, Nicolas was booked into the Hamilton County Justice Center. He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning on charges of felonious assault and domestic violence.
