
MICHIGAN — A 50-year-old Ohio man was killed Saturday evening while working on a tree removal job in Monroe Township, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies, firefighters and ambulance personnel responded around 7 p.m. to the area of Timber Lane near South Dixie Highway after receiving a 911 call regarding an injured worker.
Authorities said the man had been hired along with two other workers from the Dayton, Ohio, area to remove a tree at a residence. Investigators determined the crew was cutting the final section of the tree, which was estimated to be about 30 feet long.
According to a preliminary investigation, the victim attempted to grab one of the ropes being used as the tree was falling. For reasons that remain under investigation, he was struck in the head by the tree.
Emergency responders found that the man had succumbed to his injuries by the time they arrived.
The victim’s body was transported to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Unit and agency chaplains assisted at the scene. The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been notified and is participating in the investigation.
