Ohio health experts warn parents after increase in teen Benadryl misuse cases

OHIO — Health experts are warning parents to talk with their children about the dangers of misusing over-the-counter medications after an increase in calls involving teenagers taking too much Benadryl.

The Central Ohio Poison Center said it has received more calls involving teens this year compared with the same period last year. While officials cannot always determine the reason for the increase, they say social media trends and online “challenges” may be contributing.

Benadryl contains diphenhydramine, an antihistamine commonly used to treat allergy symptoms. Experts warn that taking excessive amounts can lead to serious health complications, including confusion, a rapid heart rate, hallucinations, seizures and dangerous changes in heart rhythm. In severe cases, an overdose can be fatal.

Poison control centers regularly receive calls from parents, schools and friends concerned about possible overdoses. Specialists can help determine whether someone should seek emergency medical treatment or can be safely monitored at home.

Health officials encourage parents to discuss the risks of medication misuse with their children and remind families to keep all medications stored safely and used only as directed.
