Multiple schools in Wisconsin could close this week

WISCONSIN — Schools across parts of Wisconsin could face delays, early dismissals or closures Monday as forecasters warn of severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, hail, tornadoes and flooding rain.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, much of Wisconsin is under a slight risk for severe weather Monday as a powerful storm system moves across the Midwest.

SPC Day 2 Outlook

The Storm Prediction Center specifically listed Milwaukee among the larger population centers included in the slight risk area.

Forecasters said numerous severe thunderstorms are expected to develop Monday along a cold front extending from the Great Lakes into the Plains. The forecast discussion noted that storms moving east from Iowa and Illinois could continue into parts of Wisconsin Monday night as low pressure strengthens over the Upper Midwest.

Meteorologists warned the storms could produce damaging wind gusts, large hail and isolated tornadoes. Heavy rainfall may also create flooding concerns and dangerous travel conditions, especially in areas that receive repeated rounds of storms.

Those threats could force some Wisconsin school districts to cancel classes, delay openings or dismiss students early if widespread power outages, downed trees, flooded roads or damage to school buildings occur.

Forecasters also warned that severe storms may continue into Monday night as a cold front pushes eastward through the region.

School officials across Wisconsin are expected to closely monitor updated forecasts, watches and warnings from the National Weather Service ahead of the Monday school day.
