Multiple schools in North Carolina announce two-hour delay after one school placed on shelter-in-place

NORTH CAROLINA — Two schools in Stokes County and another nearby campus have resumed normal operations Thursday following a brief lockdown and delays earlier in the morning.

According to Stokes County Schools, Mount Olive Elementary School was placed under a shelter-in-place order, while West Stokes High School and Chestnut Grove Middle School operated on a two-hour delay.

In a 9 a.m. update, Superintendent Brad Rice said the shelter-in-place at Mount Olive was lifted and both West Stokes High and Chestnut Grove Middle opened at 9 a.m.

Officials said the precautionary measures were put in place after an incident in the car line at Mount Olive Elementary. Authorities say an adult was found to have a firearm, though it was not used in a threatening manner and was not discharged.

A school resource officer identified the situation and confronted the individual, who then left the firearm at the scene and ran away. Law enforcement secured the weapon, and the suspect was taken into custody shortly afterward.

School officials say there was no ongoing threat to students or staff. The situation remains under investigation.
