TEXAS — A 4-year-old boy who was reported missing Tuesday evening died after he was found unresponsive in a swimming pool, according to police.

The Bryan Police Department said officers responded to a report of a missing child identified as Jermaine Mills. Multiple officers and community members joined the search effort for the child.

Family members told investigators they had last seen Jermaine near a pool at the Oak Creek Condos approximately 30 minutes before calling 911.

Authorities said the child was located a little more than an hour later in the pool and was unresponsive when he was found. First responders performed life-saving measures at the scene before transporting him to a hospital for emergency treatment.

Despite those efforts, Jermaine later died at the hospital.

Police said visibility in the pool was limited because of the water conditions.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Following the incident, authorities reminded families to never leave children unattended near water, remain alert and avoid distractions. Officials also encouraged parents to ensure children who are not strong swimmers wear properly fitted life jackets or flotation devices and urged pool owners to keep gates locked or otherwise secured to prevent unsupervised access.
