KENTUCKY — Anderson County Schools officials closed Anderson County High School for the remainder of the day Tuesday after a reported threat prompted an evacuation and law enforcement response.
According to Superintendent Sheila Mitchell, the threat was communicated to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office by phone earlier in the morning. As a precaution, students and staff were evacuated from the building while other schools in the district were placed on lockdown.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Kentucky State Police, responded to investigate and secure the campus. Authorities later cleared the building, and officials arranged for students to be dismissed.
Students were released to parents at Legion Park, located across from the school, while those who ride buses were transported home. School officials said the early dismissal would allow for a thorough sweep of the building, including the use of a police K-9 unit.
Afternoon preschool classes were canceled, while morning preschool dismissal proceeded as scheduled. All other schools in Anderson County remained in session and were expected to dismiss at their normal times.
Officials asked the public to avoid the high school area during the investigation to allow law enforcement to complete their work safely.
No additional details about the nature of the threat were immediately released.
