Isolated severe storms possible across parts of Illinois on Wednesday

ILLINOIS — Parts of Illinois could see isolated severe thunderstorms on Wednesday, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

While the highest risk for widespread severe weather is expected across the central High Plains, forecasters say portions of the Upper Midwest, including areas of Illinois, could experience strong to severe storms during the day.

SPC Day 1 Outlook

A weather system moving east across the Dakotas into the Upper Mississippi Valley is expected to help trigger thunderstorms as temperatures climb into the 70s and humidity increases. Forecasters say the environment may support organized storms capable of producing large hail and damaging wind gusts.

The Storm Prediction Center said moderate wind shear combined with increasing instability could allow some thunderstorms to strengthen during the afternoon and evening.

Although Illinois is not included in the nation’s highest severe weather risk area, residents should remain alert for changing weather conditions and be prepared for isolated severe thunderstorms capable of producing hail and strong winds.
