FLORIDA — A man was arrested in Collier County after deputies say he was driving under the influence, speeding and fled the scene of a crash involving a vehicle carrying a baby.

According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was monitoring traffic shortly before midnight Sunday on Golden Gate Boulevard West when a lifted Jeep Wrangler was detected traveling 95 mph in a 45 mph zone. The deputy initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of Golden Gate Boulevard and Collier Boulevard.

The driver was identified as Carlos Ramirez Delfin. Deputies said Delfin told them he was traveling from a friend’s house and heading to Miami.

While speaking with Delfin, deputies reported noticing a strong odor of alcohol, bloodshot and watery eyes, and clothing that was soaked with liquid. Delfin reportedly failed standard field sobriety exercises, prompting a DUI investigation. Deputies also discovered two open cans of Corona beer inside the Jeep.

During the investigation, deputies received a report of a hit-and-run crash that had occurred minutes earlier. The victim told authorities that a black vehicle struck the rear passenger side of their vehicle, where a baby was seated, before leaving the scene.

According to the arrest report, deputies conducted a show-up with the victim, who positively identified Delfin’s Jeep as the vehicle involved in the crash.

Delfin was arrested and charged with DUI causing damage to property or a person, driving more than 50 mph over the posted speed limit, refusal to submit to DUI testing and hit-and-run.

No injuries were reported in connection with the crash.
