Crews investigating fish kill in South Carolina lake

SOUTH CAROLINA — State and local agencies are investigating reports of a fish kill at Lake Greenwood, according to officials.

The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES), along with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) and Greenwood County authorities, began looking into the issue after being notified of several fish deaths in the Cross Hill area on April 13.

Greenwood County’s lake inspector and lake manager assessed the situation and shared their findings with state agencies. Officials said the cause of the fish kill has not yet been determined.

SCDES is contacting facilities upstream to determine whether any operational issues may have contributed to the incident. The agency has also requested recent monitoring results as part of the investigation.

Officials said multiple species were affected, including crappie, yellow perch, flathead catfish, striped bass and bluegill. Most of the reported fish deaths were concentrated in the lower portion of the lake.

Authorities added that none of the common causes typically associated with fish kills have been identified so far.

Residents with information are encouraged to contact SCDNR’s 24-hour reporting line at 1-800-922-5431. The investigation remains ongoing.
