MISSISSIPPI — Two young brothers, ages 2 and 5, drowned Monday evening in a pool in Gautier, authorities said.
Jackson County Deputy Coroner James Prisock reported that the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. at a pool on Three Oaks Drive in the Hickory Hills area.
Gautier Police Chief David Bever said first responders found the children unresponsive beside the pool and transported them to a hospital, where they later died despite efforts to save them.
The children’s mother, 36-year-old Amber Goldman, was taken into custody and charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia. Chief Bever said additional charges are possible. It remains unclear how the children ended up in the pool.
“This is an unimaginable tragedy that has deeply affected our community. Our hearts are with the family, friends, and first responders impacted by this heartbreaking loss,” Chief Bever said in a statement. “The Gautier Police Department extends its deepest condolences to everyone mourning these two young lives. We ask the community to keep them in your thoughts and prayers as our investigators continue to seek answers.”
